During Euro-2012 the Kyivans will have to put up with constant traffic jams. However, owing to the fact that some parts of the downtown will be opened only for pedestrians they will have the possibility to take a walk everywhere in the downtown of Kiev. Kiev government has worked out a special transport system for the period of Euro-2012. During the next month the whole Khreshchatyk St. will be shutted down for transport. Here you will find a special Fan Zone. During match days almost the whole downtown of Kiev will be closed for transport.
“For a period from May 25 till June 01 Fan Zone on Khreshchatyk St. and Maidan Nezalezhnosti will be opened only for pedestrians. During match days Kreshchatyk St. Krasnoarmeyskaya St., Fedorova St. Barbyusa St., Laboratorniy Lane, L.Ukrainki Blvd., Basseynaya St. and L. Tolstogo Square will be closed for transport. It is so called transport perimeter, where only guests, special vehicles and Kiev residents will be able to get. Between match days this perimeter will work as usual, except for Khreshchatyk St.”- said the first deputy head of the transport department in Kiev Ivan Shpilevoi.
The public transport system will be changed as well. “We will change some routes of public transport in order to go around the Fan Zone. Moreover, we will replace some of them into other ones.” – says mr. Shpilevoi.
Some underground stations will be closed during match days. For example, underground stations “Olympiysky” and “Palats Sportu” won’t be working on match days for 24 hours. It is necessary to eliminate different emergency situations and to guarantee the safety for all the people. Perhaps, the same things we will do with the underground stations «Maydan Nezalezhnosti», «Khreshchatyk» and «Teatralna». The whole L. Ukrainki Blvd. will be functioned as a parking for the UEFA buses. Furthermore, parking places for buses will be on Klovsky Descent and Gorkogo St. Bus services will be organized for all incoming tourists from the airport Borispil to the underground station “Borispilska”. From “Borispilska” our guests will get to underground station “Klovska” or “Palats Ukraini”, the nearest one to the Olimpiyskiy Stadium. From these points tourists will have to go by foot to the stadium.” — the official says.
More than 2.5 thousands of indication signs with Euro-2012 logotypes and different direction indications will be established for the convenience of football fans. Interception parking places at the entries to Kiev will work during the whole period of the championship. “We have information that approximately 2 thousands of Swedes will come to Kiev by car. That’s why we will organize 500 — 600 parking places near Berkovetskaya St. on the Zhitomirskaya highway. Between this parking places and the underground station “Akademgorodok” special buses will run during 24 hours”. — Mr. Shpilevoi says. Trucks won’t pass the city line during match days.
