Golden Gate is one of the few memorials of defensive architecture of Kievan Rus’ of the period of Yaroslav the Wise reign.
In the time of Yaroslav the Wise the city territory expanded actively what demanded the construction of new defensive strengthenings like powerful shafts with the reinforced wooden cages, deep ditches. Yaroslav the Wise city was surrounded by earth shaft with a general extent of 3,5 kilometers, they passed through the present streets of the Kiev center — from Lvovskaya Square (where there were Lvov gate) along Yaroslav’s Shaft to Golden Gate, went down to square of Independence (where there were Lyadsky gate) and again rose up to Mikhaylovskaya Square.
The Kiev Golden Gates received its name from Golden Gate of Constantinople which was carrying out similar functions. Possibly, it was a peculiar competition with the great Byzantine empire.
