The Vladimir cathedral is the main temple of the Ukrainian orthodox church of the Kiev patriarchy. It stands in Kiev in Taras Shevchenko Boulevard.

In 1852 the metropolite of Kiev and Galichyna Philaret in the letter to the emperor of All-Rus’ Nikolay I expressed an idea about necessity of a construction for Kiev of the temple which would be a memorial to grand duke of Kiev Vladimir Svyatoslavich. The temple was decided to be built only on charitable donations.

In 1882 twenty years’ construction of the Sacred and Vladimir cathedral came to the end. The question about inside decoration of the cathedral, its paintings and interiors. The member of the Kiev church and archaeological society and the professor of the Kiev spiritual academy Ivan Malyshevsky expressed opinion that the interior of a cathedral has to match stylistically and canonically the temples of the epoch during which there lived prince Vladimir.

In spring 1896 the painting and garnishing of a cathedral were almost complete, except for Olginsky and Borisoglebsky side-altars on choruses. Consecration had to take place on 15(27) July , in day of memory of prince Vladimir, but celebrations postponed to later time: All-Rus’ emperor Nikolay II was expected to arrive to Kiev.
