The Kiev river port and the station — the main river port of Kiev is situated on the right bank of the Dnieper on the Podol, historical part of the city.
Moorings of port spread from Harbour to the “Dnieper” metro station.
Since olden times the Podol was a shopping center of the city, the goods were delivered here mainly by water. Since the XIX century movement of vessels on the Dnieper Current began, and ranks of piers were stretched on the right bank. The Kiev river port was built in July, 1897. In 1953-1961 on Pochtovaya Square the new building of the station was constructed consisted with the project of architects V. Gopkalo, V.Ladnyi and others. The tower of the building reminds masts of sailing vessels.
Passenger-and-freight transportations across the Dnieper were carried out by Ukrrechflot shipping company. In Soviet period passenger traffic was unprofitable, but it was subsidized by the state. After «Ukrrechflot» privatization on November 11, 1992 the volume of transportations began to fall, at the same time the passenger ships and vessels were sold abroad, some of them were sold as scrap metal. Today across the Dnieper the excursions for passengers are carried out only near Kiev. In 2009 so-called, «river bus», the type of public transport forgotten in Kiev, started. It provides connection between right and left bank of the riever. The tram plies only in a warm season. The Dnieper is also actively used for transportation of large-size freights.
