Natonal University “Kiev-Mogilianska Academy” (NaUKMA) is one of leading modern universities of Ukraine. Considering the historical predecessor — Kiyev-Mogilyanska academy (1659 — 1817), NaUKMA is considered to be one of three oldest higher educational institutions of Ukraine after Ostrog academy and the Lvov University, and also one of the oldest higher educational establishments in Eastern Europe.
In 2010, according to a rating of the best higher education institutions of Ukraine, taking into account estimates of the best employers (the Korrespondent magazine of May 21, 2010), NaUKMA won the 2nd place.
Spiritual schools, boards for education existed in Ukraine since the end of the XVI century. They were created by Ukrainian orthodox shlyakhta and landlords in order to keep the customs and to lift orthodox education on higher level on the background of popular ideas of the union, and also a Catholic Jesuit educational system.
The settlement the New World became the center of national revival. Here at printing house of the Kievo Pechersky monastery the Kiev Bogoyavlensky brotherhood was created under the patronage of archimandrite Elisey Pletenetskii, which later has converted into school. On October 15, 1615 the school moved to the certain room on the Hem. This date is considered to be the date of the organization of the Kiev brotherly school, the predecessor of Kiyevo-Mogilyanska board, subsequently academy.
