Monument to Vladimir Veliky is the oldest sculptural monument of Kiev wasconstructed in 1853. It is one of the informal symbols of the city. The Vladimir hill rises on the sharp coast of Dnieper in the park. Its sculptors and architects were Peter Klodt (statue of Vladimir), Alexander Ton (pedestal) and Vasily Demut-Malinovsky (bas-reliefs).
Before the memorial was established, the territory was occupied with vineyards of the Mikhaylovski Golden Domed monastery. However numerous floods of Dnieper caused strong subsidence of soils under vineyards and provoked a series of landslides of soil to the Vladimir descent. It caused indignation of local authorities as a big sum of money was invested in clothing the Vladimir descent in a stone. To prevent the situation from repeat the slope was decided to strengthen by the basis there a park. This park was named «The Vladimir hill» as stated by the legend exactly here once prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich christened inhabitants of Kiev.
At the end of the XIX century the Vladimir hill wasconverted into park in its modern look. Sergei Romishovski, the head of the Kiev city garden commission, wrote that this place, chosen by inhabitants of Kiev, is equipped with numerous highway paths, brick tanks and the descents uniting among themselves platforms and terraces, exactly as the Swiss mountains.
